Alberta Events is a private, not for profit enterprise. It is my passion to promote Local Live Music wherever it is, and whatever form it may take. Years ago I had the good fortune to find a community of live music existing under the radar in Lethbridge. There was little or no public promotion. Advertising cost too much, and still does, but no one,or at least very few, people other than the musicians and bar owners, knew there was a really great live music scene in town. I had to find a way to get the word out. We needed one calendar, not one for each bar. I took over and expanded a one-bar newsletter, Saturday Nite Live, and dropped copies off all over town. There was the calendar, band interviews, club reviews, classifieds and a directory with contact information for clubs and musicians. To me, it seemed that little paper got quite a few people curious. I believe it helped to create some much needed excitment about our local music scene. The web site of the same name was created at the same time, and before Google, it had many months of up to 10,000 and even as high as 20,000 visits per month! People love to know what's happening. This world is a different place now, and communication is changing. Just today, I added a link to Twitter on the site! I'm hoping this site, and the new calendar by Helios will provide a useable and multi-layered service for event managers across the Province. The ideal of One Calendar is closer than ever. Are you a Live Music Groupie like me? Then thanks for supporting live music. A Little HistoryAlberta Events is the 3rd online generation of the print based, Lethbridge live music newsletter and calendar “Saturday Nite Live!©”. SNL was distributed weekly, from 1995 to 1999, across Southern Alberta from Bow Island to the Crowsnest Pass, and had a print run of 3000 copies. Due to the expense and non-existent ad revenue, we asked the Lethbridge Herald to pick up the calendar but continued with the website, Saturday Nite Live.Com. Our 2nd incarnation was called Alberta Music Network©, where we tried to get a custom php based site built that would allow user interaction. Although there was some success, the site never worked right and users still had several problems with profiles and images. So, along comes Alberta Events.Com. All this time, the web calendar we used was a Brown Bear Software product called Calcium; a simple but effective Perl based script that allowed simple user input. That is, until the Bots attacked! After 14 years with Calcium, Alberta Events has now switched to Helios, a robust and secure PHP calendar by Refresh Software. The public can still enter events, utilizing a CAPTCHA, and we are assured that bots cannot add their content or steal the email addresses. However, we will continue to respond to any security issue that may arise. The New Calendar is Awesome! Not only does this script provide better security, but users can now share their events on dozens of social networking sites such as Facebook and My Space, or on their Google calendars and more. Images, video, can also be included using the TinyMCE word processor on the submit event form. For a complete list of features, visit the Refresh Web Site. |
